Dear SJV Families,

We have had a great first week.  Things went well from our side and I hope well from the students’ and parents’ side also.  Special thanks to Mr. Sandhurst for getting the school all “spruced-up” and ready for our opening day.  A couple of items about Mass.   Be sure your child does not wear jeans or shorts for Mass.   They may change into them after returning to school.  Also, if there is a funeral on Wednesdays during the year, we will NOT have Mass that day, but will have a prayer service in the gym.

The Diocese of Winona is requiring a Driver Information sheet form again for any field trips we take.  It is a different form than the past years.  We think it would be easier for parents to fill this out at the beginning of the year rather than for each field trip you drive.  However, if this information changes be sure to let the office know so we can change it here.  We are sending last year’s form home so that you can just copy the info on to the new form (if you have the same vehicles).

Today marks the first of the weekly distribution of our school’s Friday Folder where you will receive updates and other information.  Please send them back on the first day of the next week when the students return to school.  Lunch and tuition statements will be sent home next Friday in your Friday folder.  We have new lunch and tuition computer programs this year so please be patient as we work out the glitches.

Thanks to the school board for organizing the SJV “Back-to-School Potluck”.  It was nice to be together again after the summer.  If you have not picked up your dishes, they are in the kitchen off the lunchroom.  Families “don’t forget” to get those important back-to-school  forms  to the office a.s.a.p.  Contact the school office if you are missing forms.  If you are applying for free and reduced lunch, the form is in the office.

DON’T FORGET!!!  Wednesday, September 23rd is School Picture Day beginning with Preschool at 8:30 A.M. K-6th will start right after preschool is finished.  We do not have Mass this day because of Grandparent’s Mass on Friday.  All  students are asked to have their photo taken for the school composite.  However “only” students with orders “in hand” will be permitted to have school photo packages taken.  We will send you the forms in another Friday folder.  Parent volunteers are always needed to help escort the students to and from the gym... please contact the school office if you can be of assistance.  Retake Day will be announced at a later date.

The 2009 Marathon for Non-Public Education is just around the corner.  Mark your calendar for Saturday, October 3rd from 9-12 Noon at the HS Track. The Marathon “Kick-off” Assembly will be held on Friday, September 18th at 2:15 PM in the gym.

Come join in on the fun! Stay tuned for this year’s exciting marathon. Details coming soon.

Fall Festival is coming September 27th.  We are asking all students in 4th-6th grade to take a shift and help.  On Saturday, the fourth graders and parents are being asked to help carry in pies, cookies, etc. from parishioners cars.  There are three shifts starting at 8:00 and lasting for 2 hours.  The fifth and sixth graders can sign up at weekend Masses to wait tables or to help with dishwashing.  It is important to teach our students to be of service to others.  Thanks.  Please help if you can as the money raised goes to education in the parish.  This helps to keep the tuition down.

Again, this year, we will be collecting Boxtops for Education, computer cartridges-both large and small, Campbell ’s soup labels, Kemp’s and Land of Lakes milk caps, and Kwik Trip milk caps and labels.  Campbell ’s wants us to collect the UPC code this year instead of the front panel.

Just a few reminders.  One is to send your field trip money in as soon as you can.  K-3rd is $25, 4th grade is $30, 5th is $35, 6th is $40.  Also, all students need to wear tennis shoes for gym for safety reasons.  They can wear them to school or bring them in their backpack.  Remember we do have a policy on the length of shorts.  The shorts need to be as long as the tip of the student’s fingers when they stand straight and their arms at their sides.  Thanks for your attention to this matter!!!

We would love to have you join us any day for lunch.  The cost of an adult lunch is $3.25.  However, we do need to know by 9:00 AM  of the day you are coming so we can get the lunch count correct.  We often have one extra meal but many times several parents choose to join us and we could run out of food since it comes from the high school.  Please call us if you want to come.  Your student loves having you join them for lunch.

The Klages family was the winner of the $100 in scrip at the end of the school year.  Congratulations to them.

For safety reasons, when you drop off your students in the morning or pick them up after school, please, please pull into a parking stall and park.  We want to keep everyone safe and it is important, especially for the younger students, to be consistent with our procedures.

The first 4-H after school get together for grades K-3rd is on Sept 10th from 2:50-4:30 PM.  Please turn in your registration if you haven’t already done so.

Next Friday, we will have our Freedom Walk in remembrance of 9/11.  We will begin with a prayer service at 8:40 and then have a silent walk around the block in memory of those who lost their lives on that day eight years ago.  Please come join us if you can.

On September 14th at 6:30 PM, there is a parish wide meeting strategic planning meeting to discuss where we would like to see our parish (including the school) in five years.  This has come about because of reduced income for the parish.  All parents are encouraged to attend this VERY important meeting.  We must pray for guidance as we continue to do the Lord’s work throughout the parish.

At St. John Vianney School , it is important to review our school mission statement on a yearly basis with our stakeholders.   The mission statement reads: “The mission at St. John Vianney School is to come together as a Christian community committed to providing quality Catholic education based on the teachings of Jesus Christ.  We are called to provide an environment that fosters an appreciation and respect for all God’s creation.”

Just a reminder that POP CAN day is next Friday, September 11th.  Included in your Friday folder is a “Teacher Wish List.”  Please consider making whatever donations you can.  Thank you!

Have a wonderful Labor Day weekend.

God’s Blessings,
