Dear Families,

Good morning!  What a great day we had for the Fall Festival!!  Thank you to all who helped in any way.  You helped make it a success.  I think everyone had a great time.  The children sure seemed to enjoy the day.  Over nine hundred meals were served.   Let’s hope we can have dood weather for the marathon on Saturday.  We will have it unless it is thundering and lightening or pouring rain.  If it is cancelled, I will have it put on KFMC early Saturday morning.

We have been practicing fire drills as part of our Crisis Management Plan.  Every school must do 5 fire drills and 5 lock downs which we call Code Red.  We pray that we will never have to put these into action but we need to be prepared to do so.  The goal for fire drills is to be out of the building in 60 seconds.  It took us 62 seconds on our last drill so we need to improve on that.

The marathon is tomorrow.  The students are excited about it.  Today we had lots of envelopes brought back.  Thank you, thank you!!!  Our count is $9,385 and the goal is $11,000 so we are getting closer.  It is always nerve wracking to see if we make our goal but we always do in the end.  We are sending any two way mailers home if we received them back with money for the marathon.  I thought you might want to know who donated money and send them a thank you note.  See you Saturday for a fun morning.  Final count day is Tuesday, October 13th.

On October 8th, Thursday, our second 4-H program for K-3 will be held after school until 4:30 PM.  They would love to have parent volunteers if that fits into your schedule.

Next Friday, the 4th graders are going to History Fest.  It should be a very fun day for all.  Pray for good weather.  Preschoolers in the 4/5 year old classes will be visiting the Pumpkin Patch on Wednesday, October 14th.

Randy and Kelly Quiring are now in charge of getting help to pick up and serve donuts on Sundays throughout the year.  They need people to volunteer for 3 areas: 1. Pick up the donuts from HyVee at 7:00 AM and turn on coffee machine at 7:15 AM; 2. Serve donuts and coffee/juice after 8:00 AM Mass; 3. Serve donuts and coffee/juice after 10:00 AM Mass.  If interested you can contact Randy at rjq@frontiernet.net or at 236-3090.

Starting October 11th, the school will be serving coffee and donuts once a month after the 8 and 10 AM Masses.  Each class does this one Sunday a year.  The homeroom parents will be calling to ask for help in doing this.  This service project helps to promote unity with the school/parish communities and encourages our students to interact with parishioners.  If anyone wishes to help beyond when their student’s class serves, please call Randy.

Just a reminder that MEA is coming soon.  The students do not have school on October 15th - 16th.  We will have school all day onWednesday, October 14th but the public school will get out at noon.  SJV parents will need to provide transportation at the end of the day.

Many students are getting a second helping on lunch items.  Each main entree alacarte is $1.25 and side dish alacarte is $.75.  Please let us know if you do not want your student to receive these. If we do not hear from you, we will honor their request.  You can also monitor how often you student receives alacarte by going to the JMC Parent Access lunch account.

As I look at the ‘Points for Parents’ vacancies, the Glows Parade, the Dinner Dance, the Talent Show all need chair people.  Please consider volunteering for one of these.

Because of the H1N1 virus, the Bishop has asked parishes not to use the common cup for communion at this time so only the host will be offered.  He also has asked for everyone to refrain from holding hands during the “Our Father” and to only do a verbal Sign of Peace.  This will continue to until we are notified when we can return to the traditions.

We are beginning our visits to the nursing homes and assisted living centers.  The 5th Grade Class is going to Goldfinch on Thursday, October 22nd to paint pumpkins with the residents and the 2nd graders will be going to the Lutz wing on October 30th.  The residents just love seeing the students and it is good for our children, also.

See you tomorrow!!

God’s Blessings,

Joan Schaffer

Principal
