January 11, 2010

 Dear SJV Families,

      * Happy New Year- 2010!!  I hope you all had a joyous holiday season.  Do you think we have enough snow yet.  This reminds me of when I was young in South Dakota and we had blizzards that lasted three- five days.  Let’s hope we have a full week of school this week!!!!

The Geography Bee has been rescheduled for this Friday, January 15th at 1:00 PM.  The boys basketball game from last Thursday has been rescheduled for January 21st at 5:00 PM.  We will have our kick off for the Magnets tomorrow at 2:15 PM but are sending them home today so they can go in the Friday folder and not get lost.

We were able to go outside one day last week for noon recess but it is supposed to warm.  In order to slide on the ice, they must have snowpants and boots.  Several of the students still do not bring hats or gloves.  Please remind your students to dress for the cold weather.

Dinner dance tickets are now available in the school office.  The menu is a buffet of chicken marsala and marinated pork loin.  Tickets are $45.00 each.  There is an order form in your Friday folders.  We will use some of the 6th grade class as servers for the salad, etc.  A table may be reserved if eight tickets are purchased.  You may purchase them at the school or send in your order form with your check.  The event is on January 30th with cocktails and hors d’oeuvres at 5:30 PM and dinner at 6:30 PM.  The dance will begin after 8:00 PM and Rabbit Road is playing again.  It is always a very good time.

The Knights of Columbus have school raffle tickets left for $100.  First prize is $8,000, 2nd is $3,000, 3rd is $2,000, 4th and 5th are $1,000 each, 6th and 7th are $500 each, 8th-12th are $200 and 13th - 22nd are $100 each.  The Knights of Columbus are working so hard to help keep tuition down as much as possible and we need to show our support by purchasing a raffle ticket if at all possible.  They are required to give all the prize money to the winners even if they do not sell all the tickets.  The school will just get less of a donation.  I have raffle tickets in the office if you are interested.  We all want SJV school to remain strong and viable for years so we need everyone’s help.  Please, Please!!!!

The classroom baskets, to be auctioned off at the dance, are beginning to fill but we can still use help.  Preschool is a “Welcome Meat Basket”, K is “Touchdown Vikings”, 1st grade is “Get the Job Done”, 2nd is “Spiffy in a Jiffy”, 3rd is “Fun in the Sun Dinner”, 4th is “Tree Planting and Yard work”, 5th is “A Cultural Experience:  Lebanese Dining”, and 6th is “Dinner Out”.  It will be exciting to see how the bids go.  It sure was fun last year.

In the Friday folder today, we are sending home the Magnet for the Magazine Drive so that the people who receive them could have a chance to purchase magazines that would count for the student’s individual tally in March.  In order for the student to receive the prize for the Magnets, they must be returned with complete addresses by January 19th.  They will be sent out from the company.  Remember, only out of town addresses will work for the Magnets.  Our magazine kick off is March 5th.  We moved it back a month to have better weather, we hope.  Thank you to Allison Hennager  and Angela Schultz for agreeing to chair the magazine drive.  That is awesome!!!!

THANK YOU!! THANK YOU!! to Donna McMurtry, Darla Philipp and Shelley Busche for agreeing to be co-chairs of the concession stand.  This is a fundraiser that pays for the referees at all the games and then gives the school extra cash.  Parents with students in the basketball program will be scheduled to work.  Is there anyone who would like to learn the ropes of the concession position this year so it will be easy next year?  Time commitment is in January and February including the two Ray Rosol tournaments and 4-6 other home games.  Darla has great notes and would love to mentor someone.  These ladies will be gone next year as their boys move on to the high school.  Please think about this!!  I hate to beg, but to make all our programs work at SJV I really need you to step up and do your share.

Mrs. Fogelson wanted you to know that SJV School ’s art work is on display at the Fairmont Community Hospital until the end of the month, including Catholic Schools’ Week.  It is always a  wonderful display of our students’ talent.

There will be a Science Fair Parent meeting on Monday, January11th at 5:30 PM in the library for any parents who are interested in obtaining information about the upcoming science fair.  If your child has participated before, you do not need to attend.  If you are not able to attend, please contact Mrs. Fogelson for information.  All 4th -6th graders are required to participate in the science fair at least once but may participate every year.  Our local fair is Thursday, March 11th.

Catholic Schools Week (CWS) will be here before we know it.  The theme this year is “Catholic Schools - Dividends for Life:  Faith, Knowledge, Discipline, and Morals”.  In your Friday folder is a explanation for our “Family Activity”.  Please complete your dividendThe play, “Rikkie Recycle and the Eko Kidz” on Tuesday during CSW is at 9:00 AM.   As part of our celebration for CSW, we will have ads in the paper.  One of the pictures will be a full school photo, which will also be used on the back of the dinner dance program. .  We are asking all students to wear their SJV clothing.  If your student does not have SJV clothing, she/he could just wear blue or white or there are extra shirts here at school that she/he could borrow if you want.

YEAH!!!!!!!!  The SJV Variety Show, always a crowd pleaser, will once again be a part of CSW  thanks to Kris Brau and Sarah Brown.  Everyone really needs to thank them as they have done this for many years because they want to see it continue.  They will need some help.  In you Friday folder is information on when the practices are.  This year we will be doing the show on Friday, February 5th at 6:30 PM.   Each year more & more acts get involved and it would be great to see even more. Parents...you can get involved by being in an act or helping a group of students to come up with an act.  We have received two  sign up sheets as of yet, so please send them in ASAP.  If you need another form we have them in the office. With only a few weeks before show time...students should be polishing up their acts.  Preschool families are welcome to participate or to come see the show.  We are planning to have a family pizza meal before the show at 5:30 PM.  We had a great turnout for dinner last year.  The show would not be able to occur without these parents’ commitment.  Thank you!!!  Thank you!!!

Condolences to the Jamelle and Larry Swanson family and the Scott Poppe family.  Jamelle’s dad passed away on Christmas and Scott’s dad passed away a few days later. Please keep them in your thoughts and prayers.

We still have a points opening for BoxTops for Education is any parent would like to earn their points working at home.  Let the office know if you want to do this.  We received a check this week for $180 from BoxTops and one for $194 for our cartridge recycling.  Every little bit helps!!!

Father Shawn Haremza has arrived and will be part of our parish for the next six months.  Please come welcome him after Masses this Sunday at coffee and donuts.  If you are not able to meet him then, be sure to welcome him when you see him.

 God’s Blessings

Joan Schaffer,

Principal
